The great German composer Hans Werner Henze had a profound love for Italy. In the mid-1960s, he chose to settle in a house that he commissioned and had built for himself in the Castelli Romani, in the town of Marino—an idyllic haven of peace just half an hour’s drive from Rome. For almost half a century, at Villa La Leprara, Henze composed the greater part of his oeuvre and welcomed musicians, artists, intellectuals, political figures, and personalities from the worlds of culture and entertainment, cultivating with characteristic elegance the art of gracious living.
Alongside photographs of La Leprara as it appeared until only a few days before its acquisition by a new owner, this volume brings together reminiscences by some of the many friends and collaborators of the composer who spent unforgettable days there.
To mark the centenary of Henze’s birth in 2026, we have decided to publish a German-language edition of this book—the language that was both his mother tongue and one he held particularly dear—thereby making his memory and legacy accessible to German-speaking readers.
