The Knothole Hypothesis is a splinter of the permanent musical laboratory created by Ettore Biagi and Tian Fu, dedicated to developing original forms of improvisation through experimental approaches.
This particular collaboration entails the amplification of acoustic instruments through the use of sensors and algorithmic composition, combined with a form of co-writing (or rather co-textuality) that sits in-between speculative storytelling, multilingual poetry, rap and shared diary writings.
The creative process of TKH starts on two parallel rails: on one hand the (initially) separated and autonomous assemblage of the respective instrumental set-ups and on the other hand a blank page where the two share, merge, implement and expand texts, in every form possible.
As these two branches extend, the work periodically moves into the jam-session studio, where the process of warming up the instruments and checking the speakers often seamlessly turns into a deep flow of free improvisation. Rather than stopping, commenting and seeking corrections these jams are based on listening, trying things out and trusting the process.
