In 1975, when Cantiere was taking shape in the minds of Henze and his collaborators, Pier Paolo Pasolini died, one of symbols of the Twentieth Century. On the 40th anniversary of his death, Cantiere wanted to honor this essential intellectual by commissioning from the composer Stefano Taglietti and the Poliziano librettist and director Carlo Pasquini the first opera based on his poetics. The choice of opera as a theater form to talk about such a sensitive theme as the death of Pasolini was born of the necessity to have complete expressive freedom to alternate declamation with recitative and arias in the musical flow of an ensemble.
